TOFEL is a competent exam that evaluates the English proficiency of applicants, who do not have English as their first language. This is either a computer or a paper-based exam and well-recognized in the North American continent, i.e. the United States as well as in Canada.

TOEFL Syllabus

The syllabus includes four parts: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Reading includes three to five passages with approximately 700 words each. There are 12-14 questions asked in each passage.

Listening has 4-6 lectures, some of them related to classroom discussions. There are 2-3 five-minute long conversations with 6 questions each and 1-3 three minute conversations with five questions each.

Speaking includes six tasks. Two tasks are related to a familiar topic where the applicant has to express his opinion and four integrated tasks where the applicant has to speak on what is read and heard.

Writing has two tasks. Task one is based on what is read and task two is related to a topic where the applicant has to support an opinion on the given topic.

TOEFL Eligibility

There is no restriction based on age or qualifications in taking a TOEFL exam. However, the applicant should at least be 16 years of age and this test is valid up to two years only and universities accept scores which are still valid.
